General information

Nexium is a form of Prilosec. It belongs to the class of specific inhibitors of a proton pump (PPIs) of the parietal cells of the mucous layer of stomach. Nexium is prescribed for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), promote healing of erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, eradication of Helicobacter pylori together with antibiotics, preventive therapy of ulcers after treatment with anti-inflammatory non-steroid medications.

Directions

It is recommended to take the medicine as it was prescribed by your doctor. Take the medicine before meal. Do not exceed your recommended dose and swallow each tablet whole.

Precautions

Before starting your treatment with Nexium tell your doctor about all the conditions you may have:liver or kidney diseases, pregnancy, breastfeeding.

Contraindications

Children under 12 y.o. and patients with hypersensitivity to Nexium or to any other benzimidazole medication such as mebendazole (Vermox) and albendazole (Albenza), and patients treated with atazanavir can't take the medicine.

Possible side effect

Common side effects are the following: hives, swelling of throat and face, rash, headache, diarrhea, flatulence (gas), nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, or dry mouth.

Drug interaction

Nexium can interact with diazepam, ketoconazole Nizoral), Clarithromycin, citalopram, clomipramine, phenytoin, imipramine.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.Never exceed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help immeditely. The overdose symptoms are confusion, headache, drowsiness, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, nausea, xerostomia (dry mouth), sweating, flushing, shallow breathing or shortness of breath, tremor, coordination dysorders, or seizure.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 F (15-25 C) away from light and moisture, kids and pets.
